TESTIMONIALS:
“Deacon Creek's musicality was nothing short of STUNNING. Secondly, it's insane how much these two draw you in with their musical sensitivity, and intimacy on stage. Like, it's just two people. How diverse and varied could they possibly be? The answer is VERY VERY diverse and varied.”
Scott Roos - managing Editor at NSMZ
"Spruce and the Meadowlark combine Aisha's gorgeous vocals over very thoughful and supportive arrangements by some very talented musicians. They can all burn when they want to.. A high level of musicianship exists that always serves the song first.. Wonderful." Murry Pulver musician & Producer( Doc Walker)
"Spruce and the Meadowlark are taking thier folk/roots songwriting and acoustic instrumentation to some interesting places. I like the bittersweet original songs, high-calibre chops, and the unique blend of trad and modern influences. They'are also a joy to work with, and I'm really looking forward to hear what they have cooking for 2017." Lloyd Peterson, producer & musician (Paintbox Recording)
Bio
Rooted in the prairies of Manitoba, Deacon Creek delivers a fresh take on roots, americana & contemporary bluegrass. The combination of complex driving instrumentals and haunting melodic lyrics help to create a new perspective on the marriage of folk and bluegrass. Aisha Belle, Kieren West, and Donovan Locken invoke emotion with thoughtful orchestration and dynamic harmonious vocals. Offering a familiar sound that takes the listener on a journey to new places.
Deacon Creek creates original music written by long time musicians, and soulmates, The Trio has released their much anticipated debut album “Orchard Season” in the Spring of 2017. They are currently crafting and recording the newest album which will be released in the spring of 2024.
Drawn together by the sounds of fiddle tunes drifting through the dark campground of the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Aisha and Donovan spent five hours playing music together. With barely any words being shared the two said goodbye. After a year apart, music brought them together again, this time on the same western Canadian tour. They wed 300 days later. Travelling through the Yukon and Alaska for their honeymoon, the dream and the songs for their own project started to blossom. Aisha's lifetime of classical training & folk roots influence and Donovan's addiction to bluegrass, meld together creating a harmonious sound that insists you listen.
Formerly known as Spruce & the Meadowlark, the duo decided to change the name as their musical project began to adapt. The duo chose their name in honor of the creek that ties their two lakes together. Without knowing one another for most of their young lives, Donovan and Aisha were connected by a body of water “Deacon Creek” for 10 years before they even met. Not only do they foster a deep love for one another, but their love for paddling was foreshadowed in the existence of Deacon Creek tying them together. The two have paddled the lake/creek system a number of times and it has become a special place to them and their growing family.
With the Recent change the band was looking for the perfect voice to fill out the sound, and looked no further than Kieren West. Before joining Deacon Creek, Kieren West spent many years playing the Winnipeg music scenes with acts such as Kieren West and his Buffalo Band, and the Micah Erenberg band. He brings a calloused vocal sound which lies uniquely with Aishas soaring vocals.
